Right to Repair

Everyone is concerned about the prices they will pay at the pump. There are a few ways that you can increase your fuel economy, and, in turn, save money at the pump.

Some basic tips that anyone can follow are:

  • Driving sensibly
  • Observing the speed limit
  • Using cruise control
  • Avoiding excessive idling
  • Using overdrive gears

By following these simple driving tips, you can significantly reduce the amount of fuel that is used. For example, for every 5 mph over 60 mph is equivalent to paying an additional $0.10/ gallon for gas.

A big part of getting the best fuel economy your car can get is by performing regular maintenance to keep your car at its best. Your Meineke Car Care professionals can help you make sure your car is running as efficiently as possible. Following are just some of the many services performed at your local Meineke Car Care Center.

TIRE MAINTENANCE

Gas mileage can be lowered by as much as 0.4 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure in all four tires on your vehicle. By keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure, which can be found in your vehicle’s owner’s manual, you can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3 percent.

TIMELY TUNE-UPS

Getting a tune up when needed can improve your fuel economy by up to 12 percent. By having just one spark plug that is misfiring, your fuel economy is reduced by 7 percent and with two misfiring spark plugs, that number jumps to 20 percent.

So how do you know when your vehicle needs a tune-up? By keeping track of your gas mileage. When the average drops by between 10 and 15 percent, you should bring your car in for a tune-up.

REGULAR OIL CHANGES

By simply using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil, gas mileage can be improved by 1-2 percent. The key with motor oil is its weight. Using the lightest motor oil possible helps reduce friction, which means your engine doesn’t have to work as hard. Another tip in choosing motor oil is to look for the words “energy conserving” on the label. This means that the oil contains friction-reducing additives, which can improve your gas mileage.

REPLACING AIR FILTERS

Dirty air filters are harmful to both your engine and your gas mileage. Impurities can damage the inside of your engine. Replacing a clogged air filter can also improve your car’s gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.
